Through the process of manufacturing the coaster I had to learn quite a bit. We produced the coasters using Haas 3 axis CNC Mills and in order to make my coaster I had to go through the HAAS basic mill operator course and learn how a HAAS mill works. This took some time but after going through the online course I was competent in understanding safe mill operation, checking coolant, doing basic metrology, operating and navigating the HAAS interface, and running the operations to make a part.
When I first saw the HAAS CNC Machines in the EMEC I was quite intimidated my them. They’re these big fancy machines with control panels with what looks like infinite buttons. After the first introduction to the CNC Mill the intimidation wore off a lot. The biggest thing is that the interface is fairly intuitive after someone explains it to you and overall the entire machine is fairly intuitive especially as just an operator running premade code. So my advice to people taking the class in the future would be don’t freak out, just pay attention to the course, understand what you need to know to do the operations and don’t focus on the things that you don’t need to.
